Derelict Fishing Gear in the Marine Environment

Zero Waste Scotland, in partnership with KIMO UK, Waste Free Oceans and Plastics Europe is hosting a free one-day event focused on the issue of derelict fishing gear and the impact it has on the Scottish Fishing industry and the marine environment.  Mr Tom Piper, KIMO UK Coordinator will be giving a presentation on the economic impact of marine litter and the issue of end of life fishing gear in Scottish waters.  For further details of this event which is being held on the 9th Feb 2012, in Edinburgh -  ..................click here

 

NEW REPORT: ‘The Transport of Nuclear Materials by Sea in Northern Europe’

 The sea transport of nuclear fuel cycle materials is a routine occurrence as materials are shipped worldwide between nuclear fuel cycle facilities. Their transport is of interest due to their radioactivity, which varies between materials in the cycle, along with the danger that they pose. This review aims to provide information on transports of nuclear fuel cycle materials through Northern European Waters, covering the North East Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea.

KIMO UK are furious that Stornoway has been removed from station while

on government contract for a refit, only a few short weeks ago the Minister,

Mike Penning, was suggesting that the tug in the Minches may have its

Local authority members of KIMO UK are disgusted that the Minister for Shipping, Mike Penning, has confirmed today that the Emergency Towing Vessels are to be removed from service in two weeks time.

Emergency Towing Vessel show's its worth but what happens next time?

THE NORWEGIAN owned cargo vessel Fenja was towed to Lerwick on, Sunday morning, after she lost engine power around 50 miles northeast of Unst at 3am.

KIMO UK disappointed by the latest North Sea oil leak

 KIMO UK are disappointed by the news
that a significant amount of oil continues
to be spilled from Shell’s Gannet Alpha
platform into the North Sea. The spill which
was kept from the public for two days
and could present a danger to wildlife
especially seabirds.

This is a comprehensive guide on how municipalities can reduce nutrient inputs from areas that they influence. It is also accompanied by a checklist to assist the implementation of nutrient reduction strategies.

There are large scale national and international strategies and directives in place to help try and mitigate eutrophication. This guide is published to show how municipalities can take action at the local level and contribute effectively to national efforts, which in the worst affected areas are not enough on their own.

A new phase of the Fishing for Litter scheme was launched at the Isle of Whithorn on Friday 27 May and was well supported by fishermen, members of the community and related organisations.  To find out more click here. 

KIMO Condemn Canadian Nuclear Shipment

Last Friday the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission approved the proposed shipment of 16 bus-sized radioactive steam generators from Canada to Sweden's Baltic coast. The radioactivity of the generators exceeds legal limits by 50 times and pose serious threats to the environment

Floating Nuclear Power Stations Threaten Marine Environment

Plans in Russia are well underway to roll out a fleet of floating nuclear power stations to generate electricity for the challenging Arctic environment, and likely to be sold on the global market.
These high-risk vessels could be operational within a year and pose unprecedented risks to marine environments and coastal communities.
Alongside these alarming developments, French studies have been commissioned to investigate the viability of small to medium sub sea nuclear power plants to supply power to coastal communities.

 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Commission Report published

The US President's Commission report on the Deepwater Horizon oil spll has been released. In its recommendations it suggests that the US adopt a safety approach similat to that of the North Sea. New report reveals the true cost of Marine Litter

 A new report on "The Economic Impacts of Marine Litter" by KIMO International has revealed a rise in the costs of Marine Litter over the past ten years.

The two-year research project has highlighted that the rising costs of marine litter to coastal communities and the need for international-coordination.
