2013 KIMO UK NEWS

Scotland's fishermen have removed more than 600 tonnes of rubbish from our seas. 4th April 2013

Fishing vessels in Scotland have voluntarily removed more than 600 hundred tonnes of marine litter from Scotland’s seas and landed it in participating ports, the equivalent of bringing more than 35 million empty drink cans ashore. Read press release here ......................

Mixed Response to News on Emergency Towing Vessels - 18 February 2013

KIMO UK is exceptionally disappointed with the UK government after the Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) based in the Minches was removed from service over the weekend but welcomes the news that the last of the four tugs provided by the UK government, based in the Northern Isles, is to remain in service until the end of the month.  Read press release here

Derelict Fishing Gear in the Marine Environment 

Zero Waste Scotland, in partnership with KIMO UK, Waste Free Oceans and Plastics Europe is hosting a free one-day even focused on the issue of derelict fishing gear and the impact it has on the Scottish Fishing industry and the marine environment. Mr Tom Piper, KIMO UK Coordinator will be giving a presentation on the economic impact of marine litter and the issue of end of life fishing gear in Scottish waters. KIMO furious with Shipping Minister Mike Penning - 27 September 2011

KIMO UK are furious that Stornoway has been removed from station while on government contract for a refit, only a few short weeks ago the Minister, Mike Penning, was suggesting that the tug in the Minches may have its contract extended for a few months.

Local authorities disgusted at the governments continued determination to remove Emergency Towing Vessels  - 16 September 2011

Local authority members of KIMO UK are disgusted that the Minister for Shipping, Mike Penning, has confirmed today that the Emergency Towing Vessels are to be removed from service in two weeks time.

The Norwegian owned cargo vessel Fenja was towed to Lerwick on, Sunday morning, after she lost engine power around 50 miles northeast of Unst at 3am.

 

KIMO UK fears the Gannet Alpha spill is the first of many - 19 August 2011

A significant number of the 107 oil platforms, 181 gas platforms, 14,000km of pipeline and numerous subsea installations are now operating well beyond their design life in an environment that is tough on hardware.

2010 KIMO UK NEWS

June 2010

The Second Annual KIMO UK Conference was held in Inverness on the 18th of June 2010. The conference examined the impacts of pollution from shipping and discuss methods of reducing it. Presentations at the conference will focus on topics such as marine litter, air pollution and The Clean Shipping Project. The presentations which were given at the event can be downloaded below:

 

2009 KIMO UK NEWS

July 2009

The next KIMO UK Business meetings will be held in the COSLA Building in Edinburgh on the 11th September and 4th December 2009 at 1300-1500. The meeting will take place in the Saltire Room, COSLA, Rosebery House, 9 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh, EH12 5XZ. A full agenda will be posted in due course.

March 2009

UK Coordinator, Mr Tom Piper announces that the inaugural KIMO Conference will be held in Aberdeen on 5th June 2009. The conference will be entitled 'The Grounding of the MSC Napoli: Lessons to be learnt'. The 1-day event will aim to examine the grounding of the MSC Napoli and identify lessons that local authorities can implement when planning a response to a similar incident in their own back yard. 2008 KIMO UK NEWS

December 2008 

KIMO United Kingdom's highly successful marine environmental initiative, Fishing for Litter, has now been relaunched. The scheme will now run until 2011 after sponsors confirmed their support. Fishing for Litter 2008 -  2011 was officially launched on December 10th 2008 at the Scottish Parliament by Mr Richard Lochhead MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment. 

 

Following the successful expansion of the Fishing for Litter initiative to all of Scotland's designated landing ports, the project's organisers, KIMO UK launched the project in the South West of England. For the South-West project, KIMO is working in collaboration with Seafood Cornwall Training Ltd. The project was launched on 13th March 2009. September 2008
 

KIMO United Kingdom has recently appointed Mr Tom Piper as Co-ordinator for KIMO UK. He will work with the Secretariat to raise awareness of marine pollution issues in the UK. The new full time position is based in Aberdeen, Scotland. This will enable KIMO to better represent UK local authorities, to expand the membership of the organisation in the UK and to increase the number of harbours and fishing vessels participating in the Fishing for Litter scheme.
