Why is Fishing for Litter necessary?
Learn more about the ecological and economic impact of marine litter

There is an abundance of irrefutable scientific evidence, which proves that sea life has been significantly afflicted by the increase in marine waste. Thousands of species of bird, fish and mammals are suffering every year in Europe's waters as a result of this problem. Fishing for Litter is a direct attempt to not only clean up Europe's seas; it is an attempt to raise awareness for the issue, which will hopefully generate further solutions to the problem. If fishermen and the general public fully understood the ramifications of throwing litter into the ocean they may rethink their actions. There are further pages on the website which provide documentary evidence of this problem.

In addition, many fishermen testify that they lose thousands of pounds of fishing time dealing with marine waste caught up in their fragile fishing nets. In their case, time really is money. If improving the quality of life of thousands of birds and mammals is not enough to discourage marine littering, the added incentive of having a positive financial impact on the fishing industry must achieve this task.

Fishing for Litter is a proactive attempt to improve the quality of Europe's waters, bolstering the financial foundation of the fishing industry whilst benefiting the marine environment.
